Merc help

  • How Merc finds and keeps what you own — email finds, your forwarding address, and adding by handMerc

What you own is the first screen after you sign in. Each thing you own is a card with its picture, where and when you bought it, the price and its receipt.

There are three ways something gets there:

    • Found in your email. If you connected an email account, Merc looks for order confirmations, receipts and shipping notices and shows each as a card you can Keep or mark Not this. Nothing is added until you press Keep. Merc reads the message only to find the facts, and keeps only the facts you keep — never the text of the email. • Your Merc forwarding address. Without a connected account, forward a receipt to the address shown on What you own, and it appears as a card to Keep. • Add something you own. Type it in yourself.

Every detail on an item says where it came from: you said it, it was found in your email (sender, subject and date), or it came from a purchase you made through Merc.

  • The setting for what Merc may do on its own — each level and what it can do, spend and sendMerc

In Settings › What Merc may do on its own you choose how far Merc may go without asking. Beside each level the page says exactly what Merc could do, what it could spend, what it could send and to whom at that level. Until you choose, Merc does what you press for — Find options, a repair, what something is worth, and preparing a return or warranty claim for you to send yourself — watches a price you set up a watch on, and reminds you (only you) of warranty ends, return deadlines and upkeep. It sends nothing to a seller or anyone else. Pick a lower level to have it do less. The page marks the default.

At every level, a purchase still needs your yes to that one purchase — no level removes it, and no level lets Merc place an order with your payment method.

  • Warranties, return windows, upkeep reminders, repairs, resale value and replacing somethingMerc

Open anything on What you own to see:

    • Warranty — the terms, how long it lasts, when it ends and how to claim, with the page it came from. • Return window — the seller's return policy and the last day to return it. • Upkeep — a schedule you can edit; each entry is a reminder that arrives in your Helm reminders. • Repair — Find a repair hands the search to your agent, and a to-do appears for it. • What it's worth — a resale estimate with the page it came from and the date it was read. It is re-read when you ask, never made up. • Replace it — starts a new need, filled in from the item.

  • Can Merc buy things without asking me? — buying only on your yes, one purchase at a timeMerc

No. Merc never buys anything without your yes to that one purchase.

When you press Buy this on an option, Merc shows a confirmation of that one purchase: the item, the seller, the price, delivery, the seller's return policy and what happens next. Only when you press Yes, take me to checkout does Merc record the purchase as pending and open the seller's own checkout page. You pay there, on the seller's page. Merc never sees, stores or types your card.

There is no standing approval, no "approve all" and no batch of purchases approved at once — every purchase gets its own yes. If you back out of the confirmation, nothing is recorded as bought.

When the seller's order confirmation arrives in an email account you connected (or you forward it to your Merc address), the pending purchase becomes something you own, with its receipt.
